If my child is new to the program, what should I register her/him for?
We offer a wide variety of classes for all ages. If your child is age 5 and under, any of our "Pre" level classes are appropriate. Be sure to follow age requirements. Your child must be the minimum age required, by September 1, 2007. For the 6 and over age group, Ballet should be a considered subject. (Ballet is required for Jazz levels 2 and up, Jr. & Teen Jazz, and Tap 2-3 and up except during the summer session.) It is the most important subject of dance training. Dance students need Ballet training for coordination, flexibility, body alignment and grace. Without this training, it is very difficult to progress in other subjects of dance. Tap is offered starting at age 6, Jazz at age 7.
If my child is new to the program, but has had dance training elsewhere, how do I register for a teacher recommendation class? Register your child for the class desired. Your child will then be required to audition for the class. After the audition has taken place, we will contact you by phone to let you know what class would be appropriate for your child. Audition fee is $20.
If my child is a returning student of dance, how will I know what to register for the following year? At the time of our fall dance brochure mailing all ‘06-‘07 students will be mailed recommendations and evaluations from their instructors. These recommendations have been well thought out by the instructors. Remember that the instructor is the professional and knows your child's ability quite well in her/his subject. Once the instructor has made a decision, you must accept the outcome.
Will my child progress every year from one level to the next?
No. In all dance subjects, almost everyone repeats a level once and sometimes twice. Even though your child appears to be "getting the steps", she/he still needs to be progressing physically. Until the child has mastered the dance technique physically, she/he will need to repeat levels. The same explanation holds for all other forms of dance. It is our strong recommendation that students enroll in ballet & jazz technique classes when they become eligible.
If my child studies with different instructors from one year to the next, within Jenny's Dance Centre, will this slow down her/his progression?
No. All of our instructors teach from the same syllabus for each class and level. However, each instructor will have a different approach. Instructors are evaluated throughout the year to ensure proper instruction.
Why is Jenny's Dance Centre so strict with the age requirements?
Each class is given an age requirement according to mental and physical capabilities. For example, if your child is only six and wants to take Hip Hop, she/he at the age of six does not have the physical coordination or the mental capacity for the intricate combinations given in the class. The same explanation holds for all other classes. Another reason to enforce age requirements is that registering your child for a class she/he is not old enough for, could only frustrate her/him and also shut out the child who is of the proper age.
Is good attendance throughout the year a factor in my child's progression? Most definitely. Bad attendance will only slow down your child's progression and encourage frustration for her/him, the instructor and the classmates. In dance training, good attendance is a must for your child to excel physically and mentally with her/his technique. Good attendance is also needed for reasons of choreography used in class and placement within the choreography. Your child's classmates can and will become very frustrated, discouraged and bored due to lack of knowledge or what was previously learned if the instructor has to review, due to bad attendance. the steps", she/he still needs to be progressing physically. Until the child has mastered the dance technique physically, she/he will need to repeat levels. The same explanation holds for all other forms of dance.
